CONTAINER BOX
WORLD NEWS
In order to own a Container Box Home along the river or in the mountains, it takes a special attitude of survivalism as well as a tremendous amount of patience. This home we found in the mountains of Taichung shows elements of those survival skills on full display.
Everything from running river water to a full sized garden adjacent to the container, the owners could be self-sufficent for a while. Along with an air conditioner and water heater, they have all the necessary quality-of-life amenities. Plus, the contruction and design of the roof shows the amount of detail that went into this home.
Walking down the street one day, we came upon an oasis, a beautiful botanic paradise, with some very unusual and exotic plants. In the middle of that garden was an exquisite Container Box Cafe' (是咩), one that felt so welcoming, it almost felt like home.
After sitting down on a bar stool facing the window wall, we took a look around the cafe', and it had an especially cosy aura, so relaxed and inviting. We ordered a warm tea with goat milk, one of the shop's specialties, and waited for our order. Let me tell you, after taking a sip of the goat milk tea, we were utterly amazed at how delicious it was.
So, if you are looking for a great place to hang out with friends for an afternoon, or just want to sit someplace to work on a laptop or browse your phone, the Container Box Cafe' (是咩) is the coffee shop for you. The drinks and freshly baked bread are fantastic, and the staff is very friendly.
Note: They will be moving to a better location soon, so we will update the address accordingly.
It's 10 pm and you're looking for the perfect place to eat, but everything is closed. So, where do you go?
One magical location is the Maverick Cubano Cargo Box Cafe', located in the heart of Tamsui, right across from the Exit at Danjin Denggong LRT Station (淡金鄧公站). With a broadway sign and scenic night lighting, it has an ambiance that few can match.
With current hours from 3 pm to 1 am, they really cater to the after hours crowd. So, if you're into Cargo Box Shops and want to experience an outdoor-type atmosphere, go visit the Maverick Cubano Cafe'. It's a great place to sit back, relax, and hang out for one or two hours.
If you want to enjoy fine dining in a series of adjoining cargo boxes, then Listening 67 (林森67) is the answer for you. The food and drinks were fantastic, and the owner deserves praise for originality.
One of our favorite aspects of Listening 67 is the elevated, windowed cargo box overlooking the small pond. It's a very pleasurable feeling to be surrounded by light nature, with turtles and fish swimming below you while drinking and dining above. It's a unique cargo container ambiance at a very reasonable price.
There are also some artwork and sculpture installations that you can view outside. Sometimes you'll even see children feeding the aquatic life, which is something parents will enjoy. This is the ultimate Cargo Box Restaurant dining experience.
Directly across from the river, there is a beautiful, multi-container box office, with horizontal I-beams supporting it underneath. With the steel frame painted blue, and the container doors and window borders painted white, it gives the office a very polished feel.
Also, the overhanging roof design is quite modern, and aesthetically subtle, as the roof blends into the box-like structure almost seemlessly. It was pleasurable to see how various materials were merged together with the containers, and really shows the architect's creative flair.
Knowing how much Mark Twain enjoyed traveling up and down the river, we believe he would love this Quad-Container Box Office. Built directly over a stream near the Port of Taichung, these container boxes are supported by multiple I-beams that cover both sides of the channel.
Although it appears to be in disrepair, the remnants of the wood deck and iron stairs still give a sense of what it was like in its heydey. It was really a site to behold.
Have you ever seen Cargo Box Garden Pots before? Over at TankQ Restaurant, just a two minute walk from Songjiang Nanjing station, they have a beautiful garden in front of the building.
They have mini cargo boxes of all colors and sizes filled with a variety of flowers and plants. The owner really put a lot of effort into every little detail, and it really shows. They also have a seating area in the middle, which allows you to take in the naturistic view while waiting for a table.
Here are some pictures of the garden and the mini Cargo Box Pots.
Having an extra storage facility is actually a common practice for many home owners these days. Rather than spend a few hundred a month on a storage locker, why not just have a cargo box outside your home? That's what these ingenius home owners decided to do.
Within a couple of years, the Cargo Box costs will pay for itself. It will be more easily accessible. And you can park the car inside it as well. Plus, you can install your own automatic spiral door, which can open by remote control. The benefits of having a cargo container within a few yards from home are immeasurable.
The only downside is that the grass and shrubs need to be cut once in a while.
The NineTea (食久。茶事) Food and Drink Cafe' is an amazing place to visit if you like Cargo Box Style eateries. Obscurely located in a remote area of Taichung, NineTea is an unusual suburban oasis, nested in the heart of a quiet residential area, less than a 5 minute walk from the river.
On a rainy day, you can spend an afternoon securely tucked in a Cargo Box with a laptop and some hot tea. While on a sunny day, you can dine outside in an adjacent grassy field. It really is a relaxing place to meet friends or tap away on the tablet or phone.
So, if you are in Taichung's Dali District and looking for a different kind of tea shop, Nine Tea Cafe' is the place to go.
It is every Gardener's dream to have their own special Cargo Shed Office, where they can keep all their most precious gardening supplies, as well as keep themselves cool during those hot Taiwan summer months.
In Taichung, we saw an extraordinary Cargo Shed Office adjacent to several fields, and it was clear that the owner spent a lot of time tending to his crops. Naturally, he needed a low-cost space to unwind after a hard day of work in the field.
It also gave us an opportunity to study the elevated awning on top, which serves as protection against the sun's rays. Without the extra cover, the cargo box's metal roof would absorb the intense heat and make cargo box living unbearable. Take note of the low-cost steel stud supporting the awning, which shows that it doesn't need to be expensive to be useful.
Once upon a time, there was an enchanted Apple Cafe' and it was going to be the fairest coffee shop in all the land. Then one day, the world changed, and the mystical Apple Cafe' closed down. In it's wake, only the cargo box seating area remains.
What caused the coffee shop's demise? And why did they leave the cargo box frame behind? Maybe these questions will never be answered and the mystery ghost shop will just slowly fade away.
Don Show Buri (燒丼株式會社) is an authentic Japanese restaurant that serves cooked rice bowls, with everything from beef, chicken, eel, fish, lamb, and a variety of other delicacies.
They have several locations around Taipei, however, we chose the one in Songshan Station since it had a Container Box Style decor. Following the recent trend of many Taiwanese restaurants, they opted to replace the walls and bar with Container Walls and Doors. However, we still need to determine if they are genuine or just another example of Faux Cargo (fake Container Box materials).
Honestly, as far as we can tell, the only thing that can be considered as real cargo material is the Container Door in the back of the restaurant. It is the bare minimum to qualify for inclusion on this web site. The restaurant atomosphere is fresh and clean, and the design is top notch, so we commend them for choosing a Cargo Theme.
We've previously eaten at Don Show Buri's other location, and we've always enjoyed their food. However, we were surprised their newer restaurant chose the Container-style theme. It's quite interesting.
The Danhai Cargo Box Library Reading Room is a unique treasure that only comes by once in a blue moon. It is the epitome of what a reading room should be, just a small windowed space with natural sunlight streaming through.
Situated at Hongshulin Station, the terminus for the Danhai Light Rail Transit system, it is located on the left side when exiting the station. Enjoy the experience of reading a good book inside a Cargo Box, and no cell phones please.
Across the street from Nanliao Harbor in Hsinchu, Hi Hai (手作輕食) Tea is a good place to spend a few hours relaxing with your friends. Directly in the center of Fenglihuodong Park (風力活動公園), Hi Hai Tea is located in a Cargo Box Strip, which has a series of shops built inside cargo containers.
It really is a special place to sit down and relax on a sunny afternoon. In addition to tea, Hai Hai has an assortment of light food on the menu, of which our particular favorite is the American style hot dog.
So, if you're looking for an eccentric place to bring a date, or just a few a friends, go to the Nanliao Harbor to look at boats, and afterwards, go visit the Hi Hai Tea and Cafe'. It's one of our favorite Cargo Box Shops to visit.
What can be more secure than storing your cars in a storage box? Especially when it has automatic doors!
Plus, if you ever decide to relocate, you can just put your worldly possesions and furniture inside the garage and have it shipped to the next location. It's probably the most economically feasible way to move.
We also liked the home-made driveway, which was probably made one afternoon with a bunch of buddies and a 24-pack of beer. The only thing the owner had to worry about was getting the technician out to insall the automatic spiral doors, which is much easier in Taiwan since most businesses use the same doors on their shops.
It's always a pleasure seeing the many local uses of discarded cargo boxes. The Double Cargo Garage will probably be used on a daily basis for the next 20 years, and will have a shelf-life far outlasting any Cargo Shop or Cafe'.
Tulip Time Out Hotdogs (戴帽熱狗堡) is absolutely, positively, one of the best Hot Dog eateries in Taiwan. Finding an American-style hotdog in another country is a harder task than people realize, but in this case, Time Out rises to the challenge.
As for the Cargo Box aspect of this shop, we focus mainly on their Cargo Bar, which at first glance looks pretty amazing. It's well constructed, and everything from the corners to the siding to even the colors seem like a perfect match. However, all is not as it seems.
For this is Faux Cargo, the term we use to describe artifically created materials to resemble what Cargo Boxes would look like. According to the owner, the Faux Cargo materials are 20% cheaper than the actual Container Box materials, which in today's shipping shortage inflation is a tremendous savings.
However, the owner was really honest about it, and he did a great job with the design. Plus, Tulip Time Out Hot Dogs (戴帽熱狗堡) are really out of this world. It's one of our favorite eateries in Taiwan.
On the outskirts of Taichung, there is a mini-container that has an awesome smoothie and juice bar. It's official name is 彼可斯Bicuss冰菓室, and they have an apparent love of felines, which is showingly expressed in the signage. Could Bicuss be their cat's name?
The shop's color scheme is very cute and zany, which matches the menu of smoothies and desserts perfectly. We also like the roof, eventhough they only use steel stud and corrugated sheet metal. But, they did a good job with the basic materials that were used.
All in all, the feel and design of the shop is pretty snazzy.
If you are looking for the world's most relaxed place to drink those tea leaves, then Cafe Tea on DaDaoCheng Wharf is the answer to your prayers.
Kushiyaki Restaurant (品 串燒くしやき) is one of the most special Japanese Restaurants in Taiwan. With all their food prepared in custom-made Cargo Boxes, they have taken the meaning of international cuisine to the next level.
Located in Nanliaobeike Park (南寮貝殼公園), adjacent to Old Nanliao Fishing Harbor (新竹南寮舊漁港), Kushiyaki has a separate Cargo Container that serves as a customer dining area. The food is amazing, and the atmosphere is about as unique it gets.
The Daqing Night Market (大慶夜市) is extremely busy eating destination on weekends in Taichung. In order to handle the influx of visitors, they have refurbished half a dozen cargo boxes into everything from offices to storage lockers to bathrooms.
Open every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday night, the Daqing Night Market (大慶夜市) is located a block away from the Daqing station (大慶) on Taichung Metro Green Line. They have ample parking for both motorbikes and cars, however, on the very busy nights, driving a motorbike is probably more convenient.
Their Cargo Box Facilities are pretty scattered throughout the Night Market.
Many people know Longtan Lake (龍潭湖) for it's Taoist Temple and various restaurants, but few know about the fascinating array of Container Boxes which surround it. Masterful artworks some of the boxes, with colorful depictions of dragons, birds, and other aquatic themes.
Longtan Lake (龍潭湖) is a well-known tourist destination in Shanglin Village, Taoyuan City. At the lake's center is Longtan Nantian Temple (桃園龍潭南天宮), which can only be reached by a maze of bridges that span each side.
Tourists can also ride paddle boats, eat at restaurants overlooking the lake, and enjoy the scenic nature walks. Plus, you can also appreciate the different Container Boxes that surround the lake. We've included photos of the various ones we saw.
